This mental workout is a great challenge once your class have got used to Word Connect. It further develops listening, creative thinking and critical thinking, and enables children to practise respectful challenge.
Say a word (a noun or verb work well) – for example, tree. Pupils try to think of a word that has no connection with tree.
Teacher: Hmmm. Let’s all have a think. Are there any words that have no connection with ‘tree’?
PAUSE.
Ryan: Lolly.
Teacher: I’ll give you all some thinking time. Put your hand out if you think of a challenge.
PAUSE. Several children indicate they have a challenge. Ryan chooses Haroon.
Ryan: Haroon, what is your challenge?
Haroon: Ice lollies have wooden sticks which are made from trees!
Teacher: Good connection, Haroon. OK, let’s think again. Are there any words that have no connection with ‘tree’?
Continue the game until a word is suggested for which no-one can think of a challenge. For example,
Tahlia: Carpet.
PAUSE. (Thinking time for possible challenges.)
Teacher: OK. No challenges. So now, can you think of another word which has no connection with carpet?
PAUSE.
Henry: Garden.
Leigh: I can challenge that! My grandad uses old carpet in his garden to stop the weeds.
Have fun!
