I came across the picture book Something Else by Kathryn Cave many years ago when I was working in development education. It’s a classic for getting children to think about difference, about how they see others and how they see themselves.
I recently used it with a group of Early Years staff in P4C training. We ended up doing an enquiry about Is is possible to accept everybody? We dug into what we really mean by ‘accept’ (e.g. is it the same as ‘tolerate’?) as well as the ideas of ‘understanding’ and ‘judgement’.
Philosophical concepts in this story include friendship, fitting in, happiness, sadness, treatment of others, difference, empathy, acceptance, tolerance, understanding and judgement.
