Philosophy for Young Children – A Practical Guide by Berys Gaut and Morag Gaut is an extremely useful book, full of step-by-step enquiry plans.
It’s divided into different philosophical strands, covering things like fairness, dreams and beautiful things.
Something that I find really helpful is the way the authors have listed possible reasons that children might give during an enquiry. These come complete with facilitation notes in the form If the children answer ‘yes’, ask them X, or if they answer ‘no’, ask them Y.
If you’ve been on P4C training with me, you’ll probably have been introduced to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic scenario from this book, when the big teddy says it should have a bigger piece of cake than the others because it’s the biggest bear! I wonder what your class will think about this, and the many other fantastic lesson ideas in this book.
